Stephanie braved rainy weather Saturday to continue with her triathlon training, which is being supervised by Dr. Cory Nyamora, the director of Endurance—a Sports and Psychology Center. Stephanie is a member of the Fit Family Triathlon Team, a group of 8 to 14-year-old children and their parents.
Stephanie was accompanied by her Mom, who is always present to encourage and cheer her daughter during the 12-week training, which began on April 16. Dr. Nyamora organized the training to help kids who want to lose weight, get fit and healthy, make friends, and ultimately participate in a California Kids Triathlon. At least one parent must accompany their children. The weekly training comprises swimming, biking and running.
Stephanie and her Mom brighten dreadful weather with their smilesDuring Saturday’s training, held at Oakland’s Mills College, Stephanie was introduced to new swimming and running techniques. She also learned how to change efficiently from swimming to running gear.
“Stephanie was great,” said Dr. Nyamora. “She wasn’t complaining although she was wet and tired.”
After the swimming and running sessions, “we sat and talked about how Stephanie can continue improving in swimming and working on the things she likes and the ones that are more difficult,” Dr. Nyamora said.
Commending Stephanie’s mom, Dr. Nyamora said “she has been coming to all the events. It is cool to see her supporting Stephanie, doing things with her, and encouraging and cheering her daughter.
“It was good to see this dedicated group show up no matter what. I cannot overemphasize how important it is for the parents to get involved in what we are doing to help the kids.”
Two weeks ago, Stephanie won a medal for completing her food journal homework punctually. Dr. Nyamora said that Stephanie, like the other members of the triathlon team, has a very positive attitude, which is necessary for any success.
Dr. Nyamora is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified USA Triathlon coach, USA Track and Field coach and Youth Fitness Specialist. His center provides sports opportunities, outdoor adventures and psychotherapy for overweight children and their families.
He also provides services at a leading weight-management program at the Children's Hospital Oakland.
Dr. Nyamora works closely with families to find fun and effective strategies to improve their children's health.
