California children who want to take part in a triathlon spent most of their training session yesterday practicing how transition from one part of the triathlon to the next. They were at California's Mills College, in Oakland. They have one more training this coming Saturday before they take part in the July 3 California kids triathlon.
The children, aged 8-14, are members of the Fit Family Triathlon Team, a 12-week training program supervised by Dr. Cory Nyamora, the director of Endurance – A Sports and Psychology Center. The children have already trained for 10 weeks.

The weekly training comprises of swimming, biking and running. Dr. Nyamora organized the training to help kids who want to lose weight, get fit and healthy, make friends, and ultimately participate in the triathlon.
Dr. Nyamora began yesterday’s training session by stressing how important it is for a competitor to change efficiently from swimming to biking and to running. Efficient and fast transitions from one event to the next makes the competition more enjoyable, Dr. Nyamora said. He told the kids and their parents that it was equally important to be ready with goggles, helmets, shoes and any other gear required for the competition.
During the past 10 weeks, Dr. Nyamora has stressed to the kids the importance of maintaining a positive mindset to combat challenges such as those they will face during the triathlon. He says that part of his responsibility is to help the children acquire mental skills to help them deal with difficult workouts. He has also urged parents to ensure kids get sufficient sleep, balanced diet, and regular exercise throughout the week.
The highlight of yesterday’s training was an award of a medal to Angel for the improvement he has made in interacting with the other members of the Fit Family Triathlon Team. Angel has improved from being too shy to interacting freely with the other team members.
The other kids who have won the medal are Stephanie and Chris. Stephanie won the medal for completing her food journal, an exercise aimed at helping improve the children’s health and fitness. Chris was awarded for his efforts to improve his biking.
